Software assumes a working world: signal, roads, a vehicle that starts. A CAT deployment suspends all three. The adjusters who finish their loads are the ones who planned for the infrastructure being down, not just for the claim count being high.
Cell service in a disaster area fails in layers. Towers switch to backup generators and run them dry over the following days. The fiber backhaul feeding those towers gets cut by the same wind and water that generated your claims. And whatever capacity survives is shared by every resident, first responder, contractor, and adjuster in the county at once — which is why you can sit at full bars and still watch a page spin. Full signal and usable data are not the same thing after a storm.
Expect stretches of the day with no reliable connection, and set it up so losing data costs you nothing:
Status changes you make on the mobile app while offline are queued on the device rather than lost. When the network comes back, the queue drains in the order you made the changes, retrying with a short backoff if the connection is still shaky. Every queued write carries its own identifier, so the server ignores duplicate replays rather than applying the same change twice. A badge shows how many changes are still waiting, and you can open the list to see them.
What it does not do is pretend to be offline-first. AdjusterDash carries no map tiles of its own and cannot build a new optimized route with no connection.
Ten minutes before bed buys you a working day. An offline map of the territory keeps basic turn-by-turn alive when the data connection is not — the difference between finishing a route and parking on a shoulder trying to remember which subdivision you were headed for.
The AdjusterDash mobile app has a Prepare Offline Maps action on the day route. It takes the coordinates of every stop on the day, works out the box that contains them all, and opens your map app centered on that territory at a zoom that fits the whole thing — so you are downloading the area your route actually covers instead of guessing at a radius around the hotel.
No map provider lets another app trigger or confirm an offline download, so AdjusterDash centers the territory and hands off. Your phone opens whichever map app is set as default, which may not be the one you download offline areas in — check before you rely on it. In Google Maps the path is: profile picture → Offline maps → Select your own map → adjust the area → Download. You must be online and signed in for the download to work.
A dedicated GPS unit still earns its space in the truck. It does not touch the cell network at all, which by day three is a real advantage over any phone.
Maps and closure feeds lag fast-moving storm damage. Your optimized day can send you down a road that went under last night, and the only correction available is your own judgment at the water's edge.
The National Weather Service line is Turn Around, Don't Drown, and the numbers behind it are worth carrying in your head. Six inches of moving water is enough to take an adult off their feet. Twelve inches will float a lot of passenger cars. Eighteen to twenty-four inches carries away most trucks and SUVs, including the one you are confident about.
The worse problem is the one you cannot see. Moving floodwater scours the material out from under a roadbed, so a surface that looks intact under six inches of brown water may be an open washout. Standing water also hides whatever the storm put in it — debris, downed lines, and open manholes where the covers floated off.
Ask anyone who has worked a serious hail or wind deployment and you hear the same complaint: the flat tires. It is not bad luck. Roofs shed shingles, shingles come with nails, and those nails end up in the driveways and streets you drive all day — along with torn metal siding, broken glass, and framing lumber with the fasteners still in it. Nobody has swept anything, because everybody is dealing with the roof.
Treat it as a scheduling risk. A puncture at two in the afternoon takes out the rest of the route, not just an hour, if you are not carrying what you need.
An external plug kit can give you temporary mobility for a small puncture in the center tread if you know how to use it — enough to reach a shop, and no more than that. It is not a repair. Industry guidance is clear that a plug on its own is not an acceptable permanent fix: the tire has to come off the wheel and be inspected from the inside, and it can only be properly repaired when the puncture is in the tread and no larger than a quarter inch.
Never plug shoulder or sidewall damage, and have any plugged tire removed and inspected professionally as soon as you can. Do not attempt a roadside tire change on saturated ground, a soft shoulder, or anywhere near moving traffic — call for service and give up the stop.
Before the season, check whether your tires carry a road hazard warranty and what your roadside coverage promises in a declared disaster area, where response times stretch badly. Cheap to sort out in advance, expensive to discover on the shoulder.
Every one of these ends the same way: a stop you cannot make, and a day that has to be rebuilt around the time you just lost. That is the part AdjusterDash is for. Skip the stop, add a note, reschedule, and adjust the remaining route. A drowned vehicle ends your deployment; a rescheduled inspection costs an hour.
